K9 Advocacy Manitoba is a 100% volunteer-led organization devoted to savings the lives of dogs & cats in Manitoba.
K9 Advocacy Manitoba is a registered charity that aims to provide rural First Nation communities with assistance to manage the overpopulation of stray cats & dogs.
K9 Advocacy started as a local dog rescue in 2015 and has since expanded to a large volunteer-ran organization that partners with animal rescues across Canada, from coast to coast. Every year, we rescue hundreds and hundreds of animals, all through our dedicated foster & volunteer network.
Our priority is to assist remote First Nations communities address the overpopulation of stray animals. Many of these communities have a lack of resources and local vetting availability, resulting in an overpopulation of unwanted, unhealthy & starving animals. This poses a threat to community members, and many communities performing dog culls (Yes, this does happen in Canada) in an attempt to control the population. This is only a temporary solution and does not prevent further overpopulation.
The lack of regulations leads to the animals having little or no shelter, sustenance, or health care. During times of desperation, many of these stray animals find themselves living on the unsanitary grounds of local dumps, exposing themselves to countless diseases and the harsh conditions of Manitoba’s warm summers and bone-chilling winters.
Stray and surrendered cats & dogs are rehomed by adoption either in Manitoba or through our rescues partners across Canada. In addition to rehoming, K9 Advocacy also assists with spay & neuter and vetting services for Canadians living in remote areas without access to veterinary care.
K9 Advocacy relies on its generous community for donations - we do not receive any government funding. Our expenses range from vet bills, food and supplies for foster animals, rent for our shop and travel to and from rural communities, donations are greatly welcomed and appreciated and go a long way in helping rescue these deserving animals.
Needless to say, it is the generosity of K9 Advocacy’s supporters that make it possible for K9 to provide a voice for the voiceless. While the success stories have been wonderful over the years, the thought of a losing one more dog before its had its fair chance at life, will always be heart-wrenching; and for that reason, K9 Advocacy will continue its devotion to ending the overpopulation of dogs in northern communities, regardless of its obstacles.
